First year in our London Flat
I can't believe it's already been just over a year since Rafe and I first arrived on the doorstep of our London apartment, which we rented sight unseen. 🫣
We opted not to ship any of our furniture over from our old New York apartment and start completely fresh, so when we arrived we had nothing but suitcases full of clothes. Luckily we signed the lease for our flat a few weeks before our arrival date, so I was able to whip up some Photoshop designs using the measurements from our floor plan and images of the flat.
However, not only was I not 100% sure of the layout in some areas, but coming from Brooklyn, New York, I had never decorated such a feminine, Victorian style apartment before. It was a challenge design-wise for me, but I learned so much about my personal style through the process (I'll get into this another time). Needless to say, having not seen the flat in person, it was a huge risk!
But we were in the habit of taking big risks in those days so I closed my eyes, held my breath and hit "purchase" on most of the important furniture pieces we have so that we had somewhere to start from when we arrived.
Turns out, it was the right move because starting on day 2, the pieces started rolling in and as they did our confidence in our decision grew. Although we ended up going a bit of a different direction in some spaces later, the foundational pieces gave us a great starting place and really made us feel at home after almost 10 months of traveling (also a story for another day).
I've loved how our flat has evolved over the past year and have grown so much from decorating an entire home completely from scratch. There's still much to be done and I can't wait to share the journey with you. ✨
